The loss is staggering.The Los Angeles area had not received any significant rainfall for 8 months, leading to extremely dry conditions, which, coupled with extreme winds, became ripe conditions for fast spreading wildfires. These dry, fast "Santa Ana" winds were in excess of 60 miles per hour and were blowing from the desert out to the coast, which prevented aircraft from addressing the fire early on. (For reference, these are hurricane force winds).Over 1000 homes lost, more than 25,000 acres burned in the area, tens of thousands of people have to be evacuated.Climate change makes extreme conditions more frequent for events like these to occur.
